Benedikt Zöhrer is a PhD student at the Respiratory Medicine Division of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. He studied Chemistry in the Bachelor and Master Program at Leipzig University (Germany). Furthermore, he spent one year at the University of Bologna (Italy) as part of the Erasmus+ student exchange program. During his Master thesis and subsequent work as a research assistant at the Medical Faculty of Leipzig University, he gained experience in targeted metabolomics and proteomics workflows.

He is now working as a doctoral student within the ArthritisHeal Project at the Karolinska Institutet, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Åsa Wheelock, and co-supervised by Assist. Prof. Antonio Checa, Prof. Magnus Sköld, and Prof. Anca Catrina. The aim of the project is to understand how autoimmunity in Rheumatoid Arthritis is generated by macrophage-derived extracellular vesicles in the lung compartment. For this purpose, the immunopeptidome, as well as the miRNA and oxylipin cargo of these vesicles are studied in cell experiments as well as in a clinical cohort.
